Mitsubishi i MiEV Electric Car will be tested in Vancouver, Canada

Add Vancouver to the list of cities where Mitsubishi will field test its jellybean-shaped electric car, which is so eagerly anticipated in Japan the automaker plans to ramp up production to meet demand.

There's still no word on when we'll see the i MiEV in the U.S., but Mitsubishi is sending a pair of them to British Columbia later this year to see how it performs in real-world conditions. The announcement follows similar deals the automaker has signed with utilities in California and government officials in Monaco, Hong Kong and New Zealand.

All of the major automakers are betting big on electric cars, and most of them promise to have cars with cords on the road within three years. Mitsubishi plans to begin leasing the car in Japan this summer before selling it in Europe sometime next year and in America, well, eventually.

"We are at a turning point in the history of the automobile industry," Shinji Kowase, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Canada, said in a statement. "This worldwide economic recession will end, but we cannot go back to business as usual. We are reinventing our industries with a new commitment to the environment."
