CarandDriver included the above shot of a BMW X6M beating out a hopped-up Chevy Nova II at Michigan's Milan Dragway for their review of the Bimmer. The only problem is it never really happened.

A member of THE H.A.M.B. forum posted the picture above from the C&D review claiming it's his car being raced against the BMW X6.

He states:

"This months car and driver has a artical about a bmw twin turbo suv that goes anywhere, hauls anything and beats anything. They show it hauling bails of straw and driving on the e-way and then beating a stright axle, fuel injected, altered wheelbase 63 chevy II on the ragstrip................Whooooooa. That is my chevy and that little red suv couldn't beat my car in its wildest dreams. Do they really have to photo crop and mis-represent the public into thinking if they buy a bmw suv, then thay too can do what their mag says. I hope someone who advertises in that book see's this and decides on why they support the down rite lies they print."

CarandDriver Official Response:

"John Phillips became so attached to the BMW X6M that it - appropriately enough - triggered many irrational responses. One of these was his insistence that we photoshop the BMW beating the clearly superior Chevy Nova. Any attempt to dissuade him - by telling him, for instance, that only an idiot would believe a BMW SUV could beat a purpose-built drag car - just resulted in heated calls to the suicide hotline and even more foaming at the mouth than usual."

It's funny, but we think CarandDriver should apologize to the car's owner. The car's owner, though, should apologize to the English language. The latest frenzy on the H.A.M.B forum is about a race-for-pinks event the Chevy's owner, Johhny, is trying to set up with CarandDriver. It won't happen of course, but it'd still be awesome.

BMW has unveiled their Active Hybrid Concept based on the new BMW 7 Series. The Hybrid model is set to debut at the Paris Auto Show later next month.

The BMW 7 Series Hybrid uses a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that delivers 407 horsepower and 442lb ft, working in combination with an AC electric motor that can add another 20 horserpower and 155lb ft of torque. In mild hybrid form, the result is 15 percent less fuel consumption and emissions (in the EU test cycle) versus a combustion engine only equivalent. (Details)

Bimmer has officially unveiled their X6 Active Hybrid which will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The BMW X6 Active Hybrid should arrive Stateside in the fourth-quarter of this year.

The X6 Active Hybrid is a monster: powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 gas engine that develops 400 hp and two electric motors that output 91 hp and 86 hp. In total, that's around 480 hp and 575 lb-ft. of torque. With this powertrain the BMW X6 Active Hybrid is said to be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and to go on until it reaches its electronically-limited top speed of 130 mph.

Price will be announced closer to the model's "on sale" date.

NEW BMW GT (5-Series) Pictures and Details

Two weeks ago at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, we attended a preview of the upcoming BMW 5 Series GT. Ever since BMW has unveiled their latest gimmick, the 5 Series Gran Turismo subject has been widely debated on our website, but also by many other auto publications.

What we’ve learned in the past few years and after many new product launches was that some cars are really meant to be seen in person before any judgment can be passed on and the 5 GT certainly falls within that category. Most likely this is the reason why BMW North America has decided to take this interesting approach of introducing a new car to the journalists or even better said: giving us a sneak peak of what to expect since the model displayed in Spartanburg was not yet production ready. (More pics and details @ BMWblog)

2010 BMW 760Li Price Starts at $136,000

Just in: the new BMW 760Li is available for order at U.S. dealerships. The price? Starting at $136,000. This top-range luxury Bimmer has a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 all-aluminum engine providing an authoritative 535 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque. Those are Bentley numbers. Better yet, the 760 can sprint from zero to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds, leaving most cars in the dust.

Some of the standard equipment included are an 8-Speed automatic transmission, Heated sport steering wheel, Integral active steering, Lane departure warning, Active blind spot detection, Head-up display, Sirius XM radio and Premium sound.

BMW Offering $4,500 Cash-Back Rebate/Incentive for Diesel-Powered Models

At the beginning of the year, BMW North America announced that their two diesel powered vehicles for sale in the U.S. will benefit from a tax credit -- $900 for the BMW 335d and $1,800 for X5 35d.

Apparently these models aren't moving as fast as they'd like so they're making the deal on these already attractive diesels even more enticing by introducing a new cash-back rebate program. It offers a whopping $4,500 ECO Credit toward the purchase of a new BMW 335d and X5d.

The program runs through August 31st and it’s being advertised as a one-time special offer.

Press Release

Efficiency may be the buzzword of the moment in the automotive industry, but it’s hardly a new concept at BMW. We’ve always lived by the EfficientDynamics philosophy - less emissions without sacrificing performance.

So when the government recently announced its ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program to reward Americans for driving more fuel-efficient cars, we were inspired to begin an incentive program of our own. Now through August 31, BMW will give you a $4,500 Eco Credit toward your purchase of a 335d or an X5 xDrive35d - the most fuel-efficient vehicles in their class.

But the savings go beyond this limited-time offer. You’ll also receive a $900 tax credit3 on the 335d and $1,800 on the X5 xDrive35d. And like any BMW, both diesel vehicles come with 4 years/50,000 miles of zero-cost maintenance. Plus, its best-in-class efficiency will save you approximately $2,000 in fuel costs over four years.

The question now is not should you or shouldn’t you. Instead, it’s simply: Are you in the mood for a sleek, all-new sedan or a versatile Sports Activity Vehicle?

2010 BMW Z4 Review by Jeremy Clarkson

"Which brings me to the BMW Z4. To a racing driver, who is used to slick tyres and fish-sharp reflexes, it’s wallowy and slithery and horrid. But to me it’s brilliant. Mostly because you can drive for more than 10 minutes without your head coming off," says Clarkson of the redesigned 2010 BMW Z4.

Read his full review here. (Admittedly it's more about the experiences of driving an open-wheel race car, or rather, failing at driving it, and a one-paragraph review of the Bimmer, but it's quite a good story. Check it out.)

BMW X5 Diesel xDrive35d Reviewed in the USA - Coming Soon

Our BMW fiend friends over at BMW Blog just get their hands on the new diesel X5 (or xdrive35d as its called) that goes for sale here in the U.S. very soon, and a full review is in short order. They haven't yet driven it much, but early reviews (by them and everyone else) are nothing but positive.

Some of what they're saying about it:

"The exterior design has always been one of our favorites among other BMWs, including the older style X5 which fit perfectly in the line-up when it first launched. The white painted xDrive35d sports that aggressive look that makes you fall in love with BMW’s first Sports Activity Vehicle and as crazy as it might sound, it looks quite interesting with the flashy EfficientDynamics marketing painted on the car.

I know in the past many of you had your objections against the BMW diesel engines, especially those of you that live in Europe and are used to seeing them all the time, but for us, the non-diesel trained Americans, those engines are something special. And this twin-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine with 265 horsepower and a stunning 425 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm, doesn’t disappoint at all."

Chrome BMW E92/E93(Convertible) M3 by Dereiter Racing

Remember the gold BMW M5 from Russia? Well if the new M5 gets the shiny treatment, so must its little bro apparently. (Yes, this is from Russia as well.) We can't decide which looks worse better, but we're not fans of either one, quite frankly. Although it is cool in some sense -- shiny things catch peoples' attention, so it's impressive in that regard.

BMW 5-Series GT "PAS" Gran Turismo Revealed Completely

At the 2009 Geneva motor show, rumor had it that BMW's 5-series Gran Turismo concept, a shapely convergence of sedan, wagon, and hatchback, was a good look at a forthcoming production model. Hindsight proves those rumors true-you're looking at the production-intent 2010 BMW 5-series Gran Turismo, which mirrors the concept down to the awkward "GT" badge on its rump.

Apparently leaving the "progressive activity sedan" nomenclature for dead (such terminology is absent in the official press release), BMW describes its latest creation as blending a "sports activity vehicle"--much like the controversial X6--with the classic grand touring formula. Obviously, the latter's genome is dominant--although it's built upon the next iteration of the mid-range 5-series, its 120.7-inch wheelbase and 196-inch length eclipse all BMW sedans, save for the range-topping 7-series.

It also helps to explain the ambience inside the Gran Turismo's cabin. As is the case in the 7-series, emphasis is placed upon the experience for rear-seat passengers. Seats can both recline and slide fore and aft, granting passengers as much legroom as the lengthy 7-series, or maximizing available cargo room. Those desiring the utmost in comfort can always opt for the premium seating package, which replaces the standard bench with a pair of power-adjustable buckets...Continued

Gold BMW M5 in Russia Ups the Ante, Probable Gangster Makes His Mark

We're sorry to break it to all you European footballers with silver-plated SLRs, but chrome is so out! Gold is the new business. Well at least in Russia. We'd love to say it isn't so, but check out this Moscovite's completely gold plated BMW M5 sporting a fat racing stripe down the center.

Check out all the pics at English Russia (where else?!)

It does look pretty impressive we must admit, but we can already hear the "Ahhhhhh, Motherlanddd!!!!" curses from Lada drivers as this probable gangster swoops by them on the road en route to his favorite club late Friday night. (By the way, if you didn't understand the Motherland qoute above, just Google "end of world animation")

What we're waiting for now is some Middle Eastern oil sheik to raise the bar and give this guy a real run for his money. And we don't mean chrome, silver or gold covering, we're talking platinum baby.

2011 BMW 1 Series Three-Cylinder Engine Plans to Take Over - V8 Killer!

Imagine walking into a BMW dealership and test-driving a brand-new car with the hottest new engine.

If you’re picturing a guttural V8 or even a supercharged V6, think again. Come 2011, Beemer’s hot new engine choice could be a three-cylinder.

As drivers around the world become more concerned about economy than infatuated with power, automakers would be crazy not to find ways to make good engines smaller. That’s exactly why BMW plans to use a new three-cylinder engine in its 2011 1 Series, and Volkswagen seems to be moving ahead with a three-cylinder version of the Golf.

It wasn’t long ago that we mentioned the idea that V8 engines could become obsolete, used only in commercial applications and big trucks that tow big trailers.

Newly-Launched 2009 BMW Z4 All-Women-Designed and Targeting Female Buyers

Unlike the original Z4 roadster, [the new 2009 Bimmer] has a folding hard-top roof and in general, has gone a bit more upmarket.

An interesting note: the exterior and interior were designed by two women who beat out the internal competition at BMW. Perhaps this is a good omen for BMW's marketing team, because the company has stated that it is targeting women with the new model.
