The pioneer of lightweight construction and design, Audi, has developed an Audi A5 Coupe prototype that sheds 240 pounds by switching steel for an advanced aluminum and carbon fiber construction.

When compared to the production steel-bodied Audi A5, which carries a curb weight of 3,130 lbs, the Audi A5 aluminum prototype weighs in at 2,888 lbs...

Press Release:

ALUMINIUM A5 COUPE PROTOTYPE SHOWS THE LIGHTER SIDE OF AUDI

Lightweight construction pioneer highlights its technological lead

  • Dynamic and efficient: Audi – pioneer of lightweight design for enhanced performance and optimised efficiency
  • Aluminium-bodied A5 prototype aids development of the ASF concept
  • Over 550,000 Audi models with an aluminium body since 1994
  • New materials and technologies for the cars of tomorrow
A lightweight Audi A5 Coupe prototype has jettisoned over 100kg by swapping steel for advanced aluminium and carbon fibre construction in the interest of fuel economy, emissions reduction and handling agility. The A5 project is the latest example of the pioneering work undertaken by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand to extend efficiency optimisation measures well beyond the engine bay.

Taking an existing steel-bodied production car as its basis, the A5 project car clearly demonstrates the benefits of the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) concept with which Audi broke new ground 15 years ago, and which test beds of this kind help to evolve and improve. Use of the ASF principle reduces the weight of a car body by at least 40 per cent compared with conventional steel construction, and this shows in a kerb weight of 1,310kg for the aluminium A5 prototype, versus a total of 1,420kg for the equivalent steel-bodied series production model.

Thanks to the significant weight loss, achieved by mounting aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced plastics onto the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF), the A5 prototype is able to use a four-cylinder engine with its attendant economy and emissions advantages to deliver the performance of a higher output V6.

With the acclaimed 2.0-litre, 211PS Turbo FSI engine, the A5 achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161PS per tonne. For comparison, the ’standard’ A5 3.2 FSI V6 quattro with 265PS, which tips the scales at 1,540kg, shades it only by a fraction at 172PS per tonne.

The lightweight design of the test car not only enables a smaller engine to supplement a larger one with no impact on performance and gains in economy and emissions, but also has a knock-on effect on ancillaries such as the brakes and transmission, which can also be reduced in size and weight. It also enables the car to change direction noticeably more keenly and nimbly and, thanks to the reduction in unsprung weight, to ride with even more refinement.

15 years of lightweight construction experience

Over the past 15 years, Audi has employed the ASF principle in two generations of A8 luxury saloon, in the hyper-efficient, ahead-of-its-time A2 compact hatchback and in the celebrated R8 super car. ASF has also been re-interpreted in the creation of the latest TT Coupe and Roadster, which feature advanced steel and aluminium ‘hybrid’ construction that allows for outstanding weight distribution.

“One of our most enduring aims for the future is to reverse the weight spiral,” says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG responsible for Technical Development. “Lightweight design is the foundation of our entire approach to improving efficiency.”

Lightweight design is a strategic responsibility at Audi. It makes a significant contribution to dynamic potential and efficiency, helping to conserve resources and reduce operating costs. The electric drives of the future will add additional weight to the car and will initially only offer a limited range, making systematic lightweight design all the more important.

ASF: the reversal of the weight spiral

The reversal of the weight spiral that Audi initiated with the ASF principle which began with the Audi A8 of 1993 has major efficiency advantages. Every 100kg saved reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 to 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres, corresponding to a reduction of 8 to 11 grams of CO2 per kilometre. A lighter body is also the starting point for weight reductions on other parts of the car, such as the chassis or the fuel tank.

Meanwhile lightweight bodies are an absolute prerequisite for the electric drive systems of the future with their heavy batteries. The performance and range expected by customers cannot be achieved without them.

Audi has already built more than 550,000 vehicles with an aluminium body. Added to this are roughly 9,000 Lamborghinis – no other manufacturer in the world can even come close in terms of the number of vehicles or their diversity.

The ASF technology is an unparalleled success story. Audi has increased its lead step by step: in alloys, in the reduction of the number of parts and in production efficiency. Numerous innovations in development and production have raised the level of automation from 25 to over 80 percent, which is nearly on par with steel body construction.

In fabrication, traditional spot welding is being replaced by joining methods developed by Audi, including punch riveting, bonding or laser-MIG hybrid welding. In the TT and the R8, self-tapping screws are used to join many of the components. Another innovation is the laser-welded invisible seam on the roof of the TT.

A8, R8, TT and TT Roadster: the state of the art

The second generation of the A8 and the R8, TT Coupé and TT Roadster sports cars document the current state of the ASF technology. The superstructure of the current A8 weighs 218kg while the aluminium body of the R8, whose co-supporting engine frame is made of ultra light magnesium, tips the scales at 210 kg.

The TT Coupé and Roadster bodies weigh 206 kg and 251 kg respectively while the TT “family” also features an additional innovation. To ideally balance the axle loads between the front and back, Audi developed an innovative hybrid construction for its compact sports cars: Most of the body is made of aluminium, but steel is used in the rear.

Depending on the model, the kerb weight of the TT has been reduced by between 20 and 90 kg compared to the previous model which had an all-steel body. At the same time, the static torsional rigidity of the Coupé increased by 50 percent and that of the Roadster by an even more impressive 100 per cent.

The ASF provides the foundation for precise handling and a high level of passive safety. A lighter car has to dissipate less kinetic energy and is also does less damage to others involved in an accident. The lightweight design combines chassis responsiveness and efficiency in typical Audi fashion.

Foundations were laid almost 100 years ago

NSU built the Type 8/24, featuring a body made entirely of aluminium, in 1913, and 10 years later, the Audi Type K wore an experimental streamlined skin of this same material. In the 1930s, specialists from the Racing department of Auto Union manufactured aluminium panels by hand and used them to build the bodies and streamlining panels for their spectacular racing cars and land speed record cars.

Lightweight design advanced to the level of a strategic project at Audi in 1982 to invent a self-supporting body with a material roughly two-thirds lighter than conventional steel and also with a new geometry tailored to this material – the Audi Space Frame.

In 1985, Audi presented the body of an Audi 100 made of aluminium but still using a conventional monocoque design. The legendary concept sports cars of 1991, the Audi Avus quattro and the Audi quattro Spyder, had skins of the light metal but underneath were still supporting frames.

The new technology was ready for series production in 1993. A shining silver showcar with an unpainted body of polished aluminium was on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The predecessor to the A8 bore the designation ASF, the abbreviation for Audi Space Frame. The production model that debuted the following year was a milestone – the first large-volume production car with a self-supporting aluminium body.

The A8 paved the way for Audi into the premium league and it also sparked new developments for the traditional material of steel. The principle embodied by the first A8 still applies today: Die castings and extruded sections form a framework-like skeleton that incorporates aluminium panels as co-supporting elements. The components with their various cross-sections and shapes combine optimal function with low weight.

The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre

Audi established a special Aluminium Centre in Neckarsulm for development, production planning and quality assurance in 1994. The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre experiments with high-strength steels, tailored blanks, fibre-reinforced plastics and magnesium.

Heinrich Timm, the Head of the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre, says: “Aluminium remains the primary material, but we are intensively investigating the other materials, with our primary focus on fibre-reinforced composites.”

The lessons learned at the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre innovation foundry, which employs 150, have already served as the basis for a three-digit number of patents in development and production – a balance they can be proud of. The European Patent Office named Audi “European Inventor of the Year 2008″ for its achievements with the ASF technology.

Lightweight design in the rest of the vehicle

Audi also makes systematic use of lightweight design in the drive chain and the chassis. Many engines uses aluminium and vermicular graphite cast iron, which is the result of a high-tech production process, to reduce the weight of the crankcase. Many models have chassis with predominately aluminium parts.

Carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are available as an option in the high-performance models. Other highlights of lightweight design include brake callipers, bonnets and boot lids, side panels or cover components made of aluminium and steering wheel rims or instrument panel mounts made of magnesium.

Experience from the world of motor sports flows back into the development work – the reduction and distribution of weight are extremely important for Audi’s pioneering diesel-engined Le Mans sports-prototypes and its DTM (touring) cars. The race cars provide the production development engineers with important information about carbon and its combination with metal.

Research continues into new materials and alloys, with the focus on minimal weight with maximum durability as well as design and fabrication compatible with the materials.

New Audi A8 - Arriving in Showrooms Next Year, First Look in November

The current Audi A8 has been on sale since 2003 and since that time has only received a minor facelift to keep it fresh alongside the updated Mercedes Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and new BMW 7-series. The minor styling changes implemented during the recent facelift will have to soldier on for at least another year as the next-generation ‘D4’ A8, according to Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, won’t arrive until the second half of next year as a 2011 model.

Details (Audi's 7-Series-fighter is on the way! We love Bimmers, dearly, but we have always had much respect for the big Audi. In the states, lacking marketing efforts over the years have made the BMW 7-Series and S-Class Benz (not quite the Lexus LS though) carry more prestige than Audi's offering, to be sure, but that doesn't at all mean they are better. In Europe, the A8 has always been very highly-regarded. As it should. We might not be Europeans, but we're still stoked!)

2009 Audi A6 3.0T Quattro Review by Motor Trend

Try splitting a market segment. That is, encapsulate the positives of both ends with none of the negatives. The Audi A6 does it deftly, bridging the space between the midsize A4 and full-size A8. Naturally, it shares engines with both, a 3.2L V-6 and a 4.2L V-8. But for 2009, it receives something in between: Audi's new supercharged 3.0L V-6.

Underhood the 2009 Audi A6 3.0T, the supercharger provides 11.6psi maximum boost to produce 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Max torque is available from 2500 rpm to 5100 rpm, where max horsepower starts and stays until the 6800 rpm redline. The result is eyebrow-raising acceleration as you pull the six-speed automatic's paddle shifters and watch as the digital speedometer slot-machines into triple digits. And that seat-of-the-pants sensation translates to the hard data: Acceleration to 60 mph takes 5.4 sec, just a tenth off the pace of the outgoing Nissan 350Z Track. Sure, the Z reaches the quarter-mile mark a little over a tenth faster, but this A6 is an inconspicuous, all-wheel-drive, 4139-lb sedan.

Audi is keen on that unassuming nature. The Roots-type blower sits concealed between the cylinder banks of the V-6. Hood popped, there's no indication of a power adder - save for the "TFSI" misnomer. There's no belt whine at speed, either. The engine fires in silenced, but powerful blasts. It's quiet and deceivingly quick -- a good combination for, say, a spy...Continued

Audi R8 Tuning by MTM - Crazy Green Machine

Souping-up one of Germany's hottest sports cars is no easy feat. Just take a quick look of the number of tuners that have successfully added reliable power to the potent V-8 -- and now V-10 -- engines in the Audi R8 and you'll get the idea. One such notable tuner, MTM, from the northern town of Wettstetten, Germany, has done just that and recently released its latest Audi R8 program. As expected, like the rest of its lineup, it doesn't disappoint -- at least on paper.

The heart of the program is MTM's substantial engine upgrade that boosts the 4.2L engine's output to a breathtaking 560-hp -- or around 140-hp more than stock -- thanks to a bespoke supercharger (or compressor in Euro-speak) system. It also ups torque to 427 lb-ft from 317 lb-ft. A reprogrammed ECU, as well as free-flowing quad exhaust ensure smooth and throatier operation...Continued

Apple iPhone, iPod, iTunes cover the drama that is Audi Truth in 24 Le Mans

HERNDON, Va., Apr 8, 2009 - If you enjoy ridiculously expensive carbon fiber race cars that rarely pass each other, go to a Formula One race. If you can look past candy-colored decals masking sheet-metal sameness, turn to NASCAR. But if you seek visceral motorsports thrills loaded with human drama, unique engineering, real racing strategy, exhaustion and suspense, then the Le Mans series is your ticket.

Now you can experience the exhilaration of Le Mans racing, culminating in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Late March brought the exclusive release of the award-winning documentary Truth in 24 as a free download on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com). Now, iTunes has made available an HD version of the dramatic documentary produced by Chicago-based Intersport and the talented storytellers of NFL Films. Check out Truth in 24 on iTunes in stunning, high definition or standard definition at www.iTunes.com/truthin24.

With all of these offerings, Truth in 24 will come alive on any Mac or PC, iPhone, iPod with video and on any widescreen TV with Apple TV. Enthusiasts can also get a hands-on feel for Le Mans racing through a new Truth in 24 driving challenge app for iPhone and iPod touch. It is available on the Apple App Store.

The Truth in 24 driving application, developed by Factory Design Labs of Denver, challenges iPhone and iPod touch players to monitor fuel use and tire wear just as Audi Le Mans teams do during races. It also offers exceptional graphics, a new driver’s point of view, multiple courses and provides links to the film’s iTunes Store download site and www.truthin24.com.

Early reviews have pegged Truth in 24 as one of the best racing films ever made. It has already collected awards at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and the Gasparilla International Film Festival in Tampa. The plot centers on the 2008 duel between upstart Peugeot and the Audi teams that had won seven of the previous 24 Hours of Le Mans competitions. What makes the documentary so compelling, though, is the masterful storytelling of NFL Films helped by uncommon behind-the-scenes access.

"The chance to tell a story about a group of people trying to achieve something remarkable together – that is what we've been doing for 40 years at NFL Films," said Keith Cossrow, the NFL Films director of Truth in 24. "The way this story unfolded, and the characters who ended up playing starring roles ... you couldn't write a better script."

The action surrounding Le Mans endurance racing long ago captivated the likes of Paul Newman, Steve McQueen and Carroll Shelby. It has become a rite of passage for self-respecting makers of sports cars ranging from Ferrari to Porsche to Audi to the Chevy Corvette. Imagine pushing a car at speeds that hit 200 mph and then drop to 35 mph in a matter of seconds. Then do that over and over again in blinding sunlight and slick night rains for 24 hours straight. It's the same as driving from New York to Los Angeles in one day.

As the narrator of Truth in 24, action star Jason Statham, dramatically puts it: "For nearly a century it has been motorsports' ultimate challenge, pushing man and machine to their absolute limits."

Even non-racing fans owe a debt to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Numerous safety and convenience innovations that we now take for granted in our cars trace back to the French race. Imagine getting into a vehicle without windshields or wipers, headlights or hoods, seatbelts or disc brakes.

These insights and more are found in Truth in 24 and the chase for the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans checkered flag.

But the competitive nature of Le Mans racing spurs constant evolution. And so it is in 2009. The mechanical star of Truth in 24 is the Audi R10 TDI, the first diesel-powered car to win Le Mans and the reigning champion three years running. Rivals had started to catch up to the R10, so Audi developed a successor car, the Audi R15 TDI.

The R15 made its racing debut last Saturday at the 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida where it finished in first and third place. To learn more about the Audi R15, follow R15 TDI on Facebook and Audir15tdi on Twitter. Or go to AudiR15TDI.com. Next up: the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Audi R8 Convertible On Its Way, Here by 2010

Audi officials have told Inside Line that the much anticipated R8 convertible is on the way, but not until next year. Prototypes caught testing last summer showed R8s with a full convertible top, a feature that product planners in the U.S. preferred over a less complicated targa setup. "We fought for a full convertible instead of smaller targa roof," an official from Audi USA told Inside Line.

Audi A6 3.0T Full Specs and Review

Two issues came up enough in our time with the new 2009 A6 3.0T that we just have to address them both right up front. The first is likely a no-brainer for our community, but the letter "T" doesn't necessarily stand for "turbocharger." Decades of tradition may have you believing otherwise but, well, deal with it. Or walk away shaking your head in confusion, just as we've seen a number of people do in the past week. In Audi-speak, "T" is now simply an indicator of any forced induction--in this case that means a supercharger. Our second note: people hear the word "supercharger" and expect that the next step after buckling up is to secure their eyeballs to ensure they don't slide out through their ears under full acceleration. The 'charger's intent in the A6 is to bridge the gap between V6 economy and a V8 powerband, not to disfigure passengers. With that established, we can move on.

The changes for the '09 A6 aren't limited to the engine compartment or the addition of the new 3.0T model. The car also receives a number of subtle visual updates that keep Audi's segment leader modern and competitive. Like the A8, the A6 now wears a grille that isn't divided in half by an unattractive bumper bar, but instead uses one taller piece that pays homage to the legendary Auto Union Le Mans racers. We're told this generation of A6 was already close to being finalized when the move toward the single shield was adopted, so that's why it didn't happen until this mid-cycle refresh. It gives the front end an even more cohesive look, and the rest of the bumper too has been refined to give an aggressive, flowing appearance. That look is topped off by Audi's signature strips of LED driving lights, with six diodes residing in each headlight lens. They aren't as elegant as the shapelier units of the A5/S5 or R8, but they are distinctive....Continued

Audi R15 TDI, at Sebring, beats prior distance by 13 Laps

INGOLSTADT/SEBRING, Mar 22, 2009 - The Audi R15 TDI has defeated its competition in its debut race: Dindo Capello (Italy), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland) achieved a historic victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring (US state of Florida) with the new diesel-powered sports car of AUDI AG. The Audi drivers completed 383 laps – beating the previous distance record by an impressive 13 laps.

In the fastest ever Sebring race, Audi Sport Team Joest’s pair of Audi R15 TDI prototypes ran the entire distance without technical problems despite the innovative Le Mans prototype having only completed its maiden run in December. Bad weather had hampered Audi Sport’s test program and temperatures never exceeded 15 degrees during the tests in Europe.

At Sebring, the Audi crew faced ambient temperatures almost double that and worked day and night to learn more about the new diesel sports car and to adapt it to the extremely bumpy race track in the center of Florida. They were able to solve all minor teething troubles which arose just in time for race day.

In the race the new Audi R15 TDI proved fast from the very beginning: Allan McNish outpaced the pole sitting Acura/Honda at the start completing the first lap with more than five seconds advantage. Later, however, it was not the Acura/Hondas which were the cars to beat but the two Peugeot 908s. The lead swapped no fewer than twelve times among the diesel-powered prototypes from Audi and Peugeot. Over long periods of the race, the four leading prototypes were covered by just a few tenths of a second.

In the exciting final stages of the race Allan McNish was able to fully exploit the optimized weight distribution and the sophisticated aerodynamics of the new R15 TDI compared to its predecessor, the R10 TDI. He was able to open such a big lead that he was able to stop for a ‘splash-and-dash’ just before the end of the race without losing the lead. He eventually crossed the finish line 22.279 seconds in front of the second placed Peugeot.

It was the ninth overall victory for the Audi brand at Sebring continuing an impressive series: After the Audi R8 (2000) and the Audi R10 TDI (2006) a new Le Mans prototype from Audi drove to victory in its debut race at Sebring for the third time. Tom Kristensen scored his fifth victory in the US endurance classic becoming the most successful driver in the history of the race. Dindo Capello won at Sebring for a fourth time with Allan McNish chalking up his third victory.

The Audi success at Sebring was completed by the three Germans Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner finishing third at the wheel of the second Audi R15 TDI. Luhr and Rockenfeller had to complete almost the whole race on their own after Marco Werner had to be sidelined due to a rib injury. They kept contact with the leading sister car for a long time. Only in the final stages did they dropped back due to extreme pick-up on the front right tire which forced Lucas Luhr to pit an extra time just before the end of the race. It was the only unscheduled pit stop of the day for Audi Sport Team Joest.

The Audi R15 TDI was not only the most reliable and fastest prototype on its debut but also the most efficient: Audi celebrated a clear 1-2 victory in the so-called "Michelin Green X Challenge" in which the fuel consumption is measured in relation to the performance.

For Audi, the 12 Hours of Sebring was a dress rehearsal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in which a total of three new R15 TDI prototypes will compete. An intensive test program is scheduled for Audi Sport Team Joest until the race on June 13/14.

Quotes after the race at Sebring
Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): "This is a great result for a brand new car which came to Sebring with less mileage under its wheels than we had planned. We’ve seen not only the fastest 12-hour race in Sebring history, but also one of the most exciting with so many lead changes and a very tight battle between Audi and Peugeot – and this in the 100th ALMS race since 1999. I can remember that four cars have been setting almost identical lap times at Sebring for such a long time. Little things have been decisive in the end. It’s a shame that our second car, which was also running at the front for most of the race, lost some time at the end. I’m very happy with the debut of our new Audi R15 TDI and I would like to say a big thank you to everybody who made this success possible."

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): "It was incredibly hard work but also a great experience. To finish first and third against such strong competition and with such little time of preparation and achieving a new record distance is really remarkable. We did not only have a new car here, we also had some changes in our team including a new chief mechanic for the winning car. It was a crazy race. The Peugeots were very fast. The game of double stints and single stints and having to fight back all the time was really nerve wrecking. I’m totally exhausted. Both crews did a fantastic job. I’m proud of the whole squad."

Dindo Capello (Audi R15 TDI #2): "It was a fantastic race and is a fantastic victory for Audi to add to the debut wins already scored here by the R8 (2000) and with the R10 TDI (2006). I honestly did not expect to win with the R15 TDI at Sebring because the car is so new and had little testing in Europe. To go from start to finish without any problems with such a new car is almost unbelievable. It’s a dream result and shows the incredible technology that Audi is able to exploit. I’m so proud to be a part of the team and thus the Audi brand, to be driving for Audi Sport and to have two great team-mates in Allan and Tom."

Tom Kristensen (Audi R15 TDI #2): "It’s an absolutely fantastic feeling. Wow, what a race – the fastest ever race at Sebring covering a record distance. Winning with such a young car which had completed low testing miles in dry weather before we got here is amazing. I won here on the debut of the R8, then the R10 TDI and now the R15 TDI – thanks to the know how and experience of the crew. Everyone at Audi Sport, and all six drivers here at Sebring, have worked very hard to be in a position to beat Peugeot here at this very difficult track and after an extremely hard fight. I’m proud to be a part of this team – it’s a cool feeling."

Allan McNish (Audi R15 TDI #2): "Our brand new R15 TDI was faultless throughout and allowed Audi to secure another Sebring victory. This must go down in the history books as one of the best Sebring 12 Hour races ever when you take in to account our competition, the intensity from start to finish making it a sprint race, with the final two hours especially typifying what Audi Sport is all about: grit and determination – the entire team can be proud in taking the laurels back to Germany."

Lucas Luhr (Audi R15 TDI #1): "This was a tough day for us. Marco (Werner) had to stop because of his injury. This meant we had to complete the race with two drivers. Of course we had preferred winning the race or completing a 1-2 for Audi. But we had strong competition. And our sister car was a little bit faster, that’s why they deserved to win. We just couldn’t make it. Despite the personal disappointment we can be content: Everybody at Audi Sport and Team Joest can be proud of coming through a Sebring race with two new cars without any major problems."

Mike Rockenfeller (Audi R15 TDI #1): "I’ve been in the car for three times and basically things went well every time. I could almost match the times of our sister car. Unfortunately we could not finish better than third in the end but I’m happy with my performance. The car was running well. It’s a shame that Marco (Werner) was injured, but it was no real problem for us to finish the race with just two drivers. Congratulations to our sister car and Audi. Many have come to Sebring with a new car – but we can be proud of completing the distance with both cars basically without any problems and we can build on this for Le Mans."

Marco Werner (Audi R15 TDI #1): "This was a fantastic day for Audi. What could be better than giving a new car a victory here? Allan (McNish) once again did a fantastic job as did the entire team. It was an exciting race, one of the most incredible races I’ve ever seen – unfortunately I have to say ‘seen’ because, with my rib injury, I was not able to continue."

The results at Sebring

Audi A3 to be available in Convertible, Sedan, and Crossover Models in Future

Audi has pushed back the arrival of its next-generation A3 by one year as it tackles the development of several other all-new models such as the A1 hatch and Q3 soft-roader.

Originally slated to arrive at the end of the year, the next A3 will now hit the market in the first half of 2010 in the basic three and five-door hatchback models. Further down the track Audi will add a new Cabrio model and Sportback wagon, and according to a new report there could even be a four-door coupe as well as an Allroad soft-roader.

The move is designed to help the new A3 compete with BMW’s 1-series range as well as a family of sporty models based on the next-generation Mercedes A and B-Class.
